Advocacy

CFUW and GWI are advocacy organizations that support education of women to the highest levels, women’s rights, human rights, environmental sustainability and peace and justice for all.

RESOLUTIONS: CFUW clubs participate in a ground-up process each year to bring advocacy resolutions to our Annual National Policy Session where they are debated and voted on. Once approved they become part of our policy. At the national level our representatives pursue our advocacy priorities with the federal government. At the provincial level CFUW BC Council pursues the national priorities if they have provincial significance and any additional provincial issues voted on by the provincial council members, with the provincial government. At the local level, clubs pursue municipal issues with their local governments and provincial and national matters with local MLAs and MPs as appropriate.

We work with other clubs, our provincial council, CFUW National and GW International to advocate for our Priority issues.

PRIORITIES: Members of the NV CFUW Advocacy Committee focus on the following CFUW National Priorities, CFUW BC Council Priorities and  in a local context as they affect the North Shore Community.

  • Early Learning and Child Care
  • Family and Child Poverty.
  • Indigenous Peoples’ Rights
  • Kinship Care
  • Eliminating Gender Based Violence
  • Gun Control in Canada
  • Long Term Care and Elder Rights: providing a continuum of service
  • Current Issues in Public Education
  • Climate Change
  • Pay Equity

Local Community: CFUW North Vancouver currently helps the Hollyburn Family Services Youth Safe House and the North Shore Women’s Centre with annual gifts of useful items.

INTERNATIONAL: Through GWI we work along with other National Federations and Organizations at the International level to adopt resolutions that support our goals. These are pursued at international bodies such as UN agencies and at the national level with the federal government as appropriate. Clubs may also advocate on these matters with local MPs.
